Market Bosworth in Bloom

Photographs by John Oakley

Bosworth in Bloom started in 1985. That year marked the quincentenary of the Battle of Bosworth Field which took place nearby. It was decided as one part of the celebrations to put floral displays around the town, and to enter the Britain in Bloom Competition. In 1985 we were regional winners, England winners and also competed in the National Finals. Because of this success it was decided to continue to enter the competition thus the Bosworth in Bloom Committee was formed.

Towards the end of 2008 we streamlined our committee structure and made a positive effort to attract more active volunteers. The result was another highly sucessful year for Bosworth in Bloom and, despite a very wet summer, the village was awash with colour from May to October. Thanks to the enthusiasm of the committee and volunteers we came top of our category with an all-time record of 180 points out of a possible 200, regaining the trophy and earning a Gold Award. Combined with the new awards presented to the Primary School and the Parish Council, this is a remarkable tribute to the commitment of the people of Market Bosworth to the quality of their environment and the sense of community that makes our village such a great place to live.
